A short history
Descriptions
of Chinese martial arts can be traced to the Xia Dynasty 夏朝(BC 2205-BC
1806)
which existed
more than 4000 years ago. The Shaolin Arts has a long and rich heritage going
back to the beginning of modern civilization. Chinese historians point to military
manuals and documents dated between BC 2698 to AD 220, which prove that between
Yellow Emperor Huang-Ti (Huang Di) and Han emperors actively funded the study
and refinement of Shaolin Kung Fu.
According
to legend, the evolution of Karate began in 520 AD when Bodhidharma 達磨 (Daruma) , Indian Buddhist
monk arrived in small forest Shaolin temple.
From there it appeared in Okinawa, a Japanese Island.
In
addition to being the birthplace of Chan (禅 Zen) Buddhism, Shaolin is the
first temple that institutionalized Karate. He taught Chan (or Zen) Buddhism to the monks
at the Shaolin Temple in Henan province. The monks were not physically capable
of withstanding the ascetic practices of his teaching, so he began to teach
them exercises based on a fighting system. He introduced a systematized set of
exercises designed to strengthen the mind and body, exercises which allegedly
marked the beginning of the Shaolin style of temple boxing. Bodhidharma's
teachings later became the basis for the majority of Chinese martial arts.
